| | Let's write the story of our next 20 years together |
| | Here we are in October 2022. We are pleased to welcome you in this 9th issue of our iAeroNEWS. It's already been 4 months since we met to celebrate the 20th anniversary of iAero. 20 years that have united the people of iAero around ambitious projects, including APIBOX. What energy, determination and adventures to install our recorder of parameters in aircraft and consciousness! Many of you joined us last June to celebrate these 20 years of a story that is still in its infancy. We wanted to thank you again for your joyful participation which made all our teams proud of the work accomplished. What figure can symbolize our journey? ... 900. 900+ APIBOX are installed today in multiple aircraft around the world. This is remarkable, even though the ED 155 standard has not yet been adopted. And it's so few compared to the number of aircraft and helicopters in service worldwide. So our challenge for the next 20 years starts today! To make flying safer, maintenance more preventive and predictable, insurers more confident, pilots more experienced and owners more serene. | | APIBOX, the guardian angel of aircraft owners |
| | Being an owner means taking great care of your aircraft. It means maintaining it, securing it, preserving it, on a daily basis and over the long term. It also means optimizing its use and even making the investment profitable. And renting is often the solution. So how can you ensure that your rental is trouble-free from the moment you start up your engine? The APIBOX parameter recorder tells you everything! It can detect and alert you to a malfunction, a failure, an oversight, an error or a mistake. It traces the different dynamic phases of the aircraft, from engine ignition to shutdown. It greatly facilitates the analysis of the flight and its engine parameters, instruments but also voice and even images if a camera is installed in the cockpit. There are many practical examples: engine under or over speed, poor instrument reading, hard landing, overweight, forgotten checks, tendency to fly more to one side, etc. More than 100 parameters are screened. | | The Apibox is getting richer - latest developments... |
| | The APIBOX software has undergone a major evolution this year. The updated transmission module now supports 4G LTE. Why this change now? As the APIBOX is universal and installed all over the world, the network coverage must be as wide as possible. Today, 4G is the reference for the vast majority of countries. 5G is therefore not on the agenda (especially since, thanks to our own encryption and data management system, iAero does not require a large bandwidth for transmission…) Innovation is at the heart of iAero's business. APIBOX evolutions meet the expectations and needs expressed by users. Next evolution: the software of our recorder will soon be able to connect automatically with the maintenance software solution (CAMO). One of the most significant recent innovations, which has generated a lot of interest, is the recording of the position of the flight controls and power lever(s). Because it is directly linked to piloting. Without these parameters, the pilot's actions can only be deduced from the analysis of engine, instrumentation and flight parameters. With this addition, the understanding of what happens in the cockpit is immediate and therefore very instructive for the pilot and for the students. Today, more and more aircraft are equipped with it (more than 900 worldwide): among others, the Ecureuil helicopters of the French Gendarmerie, the Dauphin helicopters used for medical evacuations in England, the Extra 300 aircarft of the French Air Force aerobatic teams as well as the KT-1 aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force training school... | | Understanding the causes of an in-flight accident |
| | It was 6 months ago, an aircraft used for training, was on an instructional flight; the aircraft crashed fatally. What happened? A process of alert and authorizations followed to understand the reasons of this accident. First, the manufacturer contacted iAero for help in recovering the APIBOX in use in this aircraft and for analyzing the recorded data. At the same time, the user of the aircraft had to contact the French Bureau of Investigation to perform the analysis. This is how the French Accident Investigation Bureau for State Aeronautical Safety (Bureau Enquêtes Accidents: BEA-É) was able to extract the data from the APIBOX with the close cooperation of iAero and entrust it to the local authorities. Elapsed time: 3 weeks. We had to act quickly because the entire flight school fleet was grounded. Thanks to APIBOX, the root cause of the accident was identified, corrective actions were taken and the grounding was lifted. Beyond the human tragedy, the accident of an aircraft remains an enigma and an ordeal for all parties involved. Accidents only happen when a combination of events and actions occur. APIBOX helps to unravel each phase. APIBOX is the key to solving the puzzle and learning the lessons so that the circumstances of such a tragedy do not happen again. | |

| | | It’s 10 a.m. this September morning. The sun is shining on the Payerne air base in Switzerland (ICAO code: LSMP). The mountainous landscape around Lake Neuchâtel, the largest lake in Switzerland, offers an exquisite environment. Gérald Ducoin, General Manager and test pilot at iAero, is preparing to fly the SolarStratos stratospheric solar aircraft. It all began two weeks earlier with a meeting with the SolarXplorers team on site. "It was a great human encounter and a technical discovery of this plane with its extraordinary dimensions," Gérald tells us. “A wingspan of 25 meters wide and 8 meters long, solar panels that run along the wings, i.e. 22 m2 of solar field that feed lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 14kWh, expandable to 21 kWh”. Gerald, used to test flights on let's say more conventional planes, is enthusiastic about the idea of living this experience. But he is only at the beginning of his surprises. An essential condition for the flight: to have parachuted. No sooner said than done! Gérald will have his first jump in Switzerland the next day from a PC6. 40 seconds of fall that he is not ready to forget. So, Gérald, how was this first test flight? "Before leaving the ground, you have to take care of the wings during taxiing, anticipate the movements on the ground. Then, in flight, it is silence. It's an incredible feeling of peace and quietness. There is no fuel tank to go empty; the batteries are recharged in flight by the sun. It's amazing," says Gérald. His first test flight took place locally, at 5000 ft, to measure performance at low altitude. "The flight was smooth, with very little power and its piloting is similar to that of a glider" Gérald tells us, visibly conquered by this demonstrator. But the adventure doesn't stop here. | | Do you know the General Aviation Industry and Professionals Group (GIPAG in French) ? If the answer is yes, you must know its illustrious president, Françoise Horiot, who has served for the past fifteen years. Her dynamism is legendary. She now puts all her energy into the new strategic committee of the group that she recently created, the relay of the presidency having been transmitted to Ghislaine Barrère. Her ambition is clear. “Among the topics on the agenda, one is at the top of the list: convincing the national authorities of the merits of installing APIBOX in general aviation aircraft”. Françoise Horiot is convinced of the benefits of such equipment for prevention and reduction of maintenance costs, in addition to improve safety . "With the increase in the price of fuel, spare parts, insurance, etc., our budgets are increasingly constrained. However, we have a lever to limit maintenance costs: APIBOX," says Françoise. "The analysis of the parameters recorded in the APIBOX offers two advantages: preventive management of the wear and tear of parts and a possible revision of the maintenance cycles defined by the manufacturers. Françoise knows what she is talking about. She manages Troyes Aviation, a company specializing in aeronautical maintenance. "We're going to think together, within the committee, about building a strategy to demonstrate in a pragmatic way the gains we can obtain. It is now up to iAero to provide all the data for a comparative study of aircraft performance with and without APIBOX. It is clear that Françoise and GIPAG are strong allies to lead this mission with the national authorities. Appointment is made at the next GIPAG strategic committee in the coming weeks. | |
