n°10 I March 2023

Fly safe

The year 2023 is off to a good start. The Covid crisis, which severely impacted our aviation sector, is behind us; the outlook for air traffic is approaching its pre-crisis level, and our sector is making significant progress in its ecological transition.

At the same time, the Aeronautics Training and Career fair held at Le Bourget in early February was again well attended. More than 10,500 visitors came to meet with flight schools and exhibiting companies over three days.

These schools are delighted, they are full to capacity... and yet... the shortage of professional pilots concerns experienced pilots much more than "low timers".

So how can we better adapt to the needs of the market?

Flight schools will have to redouble their efforts to promote their training, to develop their attractiveness against competition, to increase their level of training requirements in order to be among the best. At the same time, they are faced with the challenges of increasing costs, spare parts, fuel, etc., and must optimize training in order to maintain the attractiveness of training and flying at a high level.

In this context, we can only be delighted to multiply the deployment of our APIBOX to support the excellence of flight training, improve the efficiency of teaching, to strengthen the skills of pilots throughout their flights and to optimize aircraft maintenance, all in the service of safety.

Our small orange box associated with its debriefing software guarantees flight schools a definite differentiation asset. The feedback we receive every day proves it.

So, at the end of the winter, which generally marks the resumption of flights, I can only wish you all very nice and safe flights!

Happy reading and fly safe!

APIBOX and YOU

APIBOX, the ideal trusted third party

It is not uncommon to find a reluctance to integrate an APIBOX into an aircraft. This reluctance is most often expressed by pilots who invoke the suspicion that they are under surveillance...

The objective is obviously not there, the factual knowledge and understanding of a mechanical incident or a piloting error being of indisputable use for all the people concerned with the aircraft.

Aircraft rental companies have understood this and have contacted our company iAero to have an APIBOX installed in their aircraft.

  • How to be sure that a limitation has not been exceeded?
  • What is the source of a malfunction found after the return of the airplane?
  • What mechanical checks can be performed before calling a mechanic?

These are all issues of concern for an aircraft rental company in search of security and peace of mind for its customers, its aircraft, its insurance, its company... the primary interest being to guarantee mutual trust in the rented aircraft.

The APIBOX allows a real-time analysis of the proper functioning of all parameters and to detect sources of error or malfunction. Thanks to its more than hundred recorded parameters, the traceability of the aircraft's health is a guarantee for the aircraft lessor and a peace of mind for the pilots. Each factual element returned by the recorder is in essence neutral and objective. Everyone can thus understand the situation and act with full knowledge of the facts.

APIBOX is an opportunity to build confidence for all!

YOUR DATA IN THE APIBOX

APIBOX vs GARMIN: the match!

What are the differences between an APIBOX and a GARMIN G1000®?

We sometimes hear: "I don't need an APIBOX because I have a G1000 on board". This would imply that the G1000 would be the equivalent of the APIBOX...

But what is it in reality?

At first glance, the 2 avionics solutions rely on and collect data from flight and engine parameters, even if their respective purposes are quite different: direct assistance for piloting and navigation with the G1000, traceability, improved practices and training, improved safety, maintenance optimization with the APIBOX.

In reality, each device has its own advantages and specificities that make it technically and functionally complementary to the other. They are not in competition. The combination of Garmin G1000 or any other avionics suite with APIBOX ensures the best possible result/data acquisition for the user/customer/school/maintenance organization.

Summary of the main differentiating characteristics related to data (excluding usage and functionalities):

In the end, one does not replace the other in either function or capability.

So it is more than useful to be able to rely on both solutions, don't you think?

APIBOX, WHAT FOR?

APIBOX, CAMO's ally

How can our flight recorder be the ideal partner for a Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO)?

The contract between an aircraft owner and a CAMO commits the latter to a complete and regular monitoring of the aircraft's maintenance. Thus, the follow-up of flight hours is part of the data to be provided every month to the organization in order to schedule maintenance operations.

Easy at first sight? Not so sure...

Françoise Horiot, Director of the Troyes Aviation maintenance workshop, explains why.

"We are obliged to keep a monthly record of the flight hours of each aircraft entrusted to us under a continuing airworthiness contract. Unfortunately, 50% of the customers we question do not answer us. This is a contractual commitment that we must respect together. With an APIBOX-equipped device, we have direct online access to the recorded data. There is no need to ask the owner every time the data is due.

But that's not the only advantage...

"APIBOX can save money, which is extremely important when faced with rising costs such as fuel and insurance," says Françoise Horiot. "Thanks to the recorded data, we have a perfect analysis of the condition of certain aircraft parts. A landing gear, for example, which is well managed throughout the flight, could see its maintenance shift from 5,000 landings to 6,000. The presence of specific sensors allowing this continuous monitoring would allow better management of maintenance deadlines, in agreement with the manufacturers," Françoise Horiot continues, concluding, "Let's rely on technical solutions that have proven themselves!

BEHIND THE SCENES OF IAERO...

iAero Puma trainer in Djibouti

iAero is partnering with OGMA, a subsidiary of the Embraer Group, for the maintenance of 4 PUMA SA330 helicopters stationed at Djibouti Air Force Base 188, on behalf of the French Air Force and the French Army.

iAero provides a test pilot and a test flight engineer to carry out flight tests of the Pumas during the 300-hour periodic inspections. Together, they carry out the first rotations, the balancing of the aircraft and validate all the parameters of the machine.

They work alongside some 15 OGMA staff in Djibouti.

And it's not over yet, because since mid-2022, a co-pilot has joined them.

This is a job that requires a lot of availability. Their presence in Djibouti is determined by the progress of maintenance work. Their mobilization can be decided in a few days and lead them to stay on site for several weeks.

This is a little-known, but very real and recognized know-how of iAero for many years.

iAero's test pilots are competent on the entire range of Airbus helicopters (among others) and work all over the world.

THE WORD TO...

Julien REGAL, Workshop manager at HBG France in Chalon-sur-Saône

Final adjustments are underway...

In a few days, the first APIBOX installed in a Robinson 44 helicopter will be powered up. And it's happening in the HBG workshop in Chalon-sur-Saône. Julien Regal, head of the workshop, tells us about his experience.

How did the installation go, which is a first for you and for iAero?

"It was easy," says Julien. "The design is simple; the installation instructions are well done; and the iAero team is nice! It's always fun to install new equipment in these conditions. We took advantage of a big visit of one of our Robinson 44 to proceed to this test installation. Indeed, our agreement with iAero covers the installation and operation of this APIBOX system by our company in exchange for feedback from the installation and access to flight data. iAero will thus be able to perfect its documents and optimize its support during installation and data management for its future orders."

What are the advantages for HBG of having APIBOX on the R44?

"There are many advantages," explains Julien. "First of all, we have two other parameter recording systems installed in our machines. This is an opportunity for us to test this one and to offer an alternative solution. Eventually, we could equip the 7 other R44s that we operate at our other bases in France and Switzerland and potentially also other aircraft in our fleet.

In addition, the hundred or so parameters recorded by the APIBOX will be very useful for ensuring the safety of flights when renting.

Finally, it will be a powerful tool for debriefing flights in school. The installation of the APIBOX on one of our R44s is a great opportunity for us and for iAero."

We let Julien concentrate on the final touches. This mechanics lover is no less of a pilot. Qualified on Cabri and R44, Julien likes to fly what he maintains!
